MANN+HUMMEL is seeking an experienced and skilled Tooling Specialist to join our team in Portage, MI. The Tooling Specialist will be responsible for the repair, modification, and fabrication of tooling equipment used in our plastic injection molding processes. This role requires expertise in tool and die repair, a strong mechanical background, and the ability to work independently while ensuring the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

Main Tasks

  • Emergency Repair: Perform emergency repairs on plastic injection tooling and die to minimize production downtime.
  • Tool Modification & Fabrication: Modify and fabricate tooling equipment based on engineering directions and blueprints, ensuring precise adherence to specifications.
  • Component Fabrication: Create component parts from samples and/or prints, utilizing your expertise in machining and tooling.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Coordinate and execute preventive maintenance (PM) on plastic injection tools, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
  • Maintenance Management: Utilize the Centralized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to accurately record daily activities and maintenance work.
  • Project Management: Organize and complete scheduled PMs, continuous improvement projects, and other manufacturing-related tasks as assigned.
  • Troubleshooting: Apply troubleshooting techniques and root cause analysis to diagnose and resolve issues with plastic injection molds, ensuring effective corrective actions.

Your Profile

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Successful completion of a tool and die apprenticeship with a journeyman’s card, or a minimum of 8 years of proven experience in tool and die mold repair.
  • Extensive experience in plastic injection molding equipment, with a deep understanding of hot runner and valve gate systems.
  • Strong mechanical background with hands-on experience in tool room machining.
  • Proficiency in MIG and TIG welding, with necessary qualifications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with shop tools and automated equipment.
  • Ability to work independently, plan and requisition parts and materials, and manage your own workload while ensuring successful project completion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with advanced machining techniques and automation.
  • Experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, particularly within the automotive industry.
