Role Summary
This is an on-site position based at our location in Portage, MI (South Campus).
The Controls Engineer will be responsible for the integration of automation controls for new products being launched into production as well as the implementation of improvement activities for products currently in production. This position is responsible for maintaining/troubleshooting of automation controls to support operations. This position is also responsible for integrating new technologies into existing equipment. This position participates in 8D resolution, scrap reduction, downtime reduction, and cost reduction activities.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists the maintenance department in troubleshooting machines through PLC ladder logic STL and SCL

Writes new PLC logic and performs hardware and software upgrades as necessary to support kaizen or corrective actions requests

Integrate third-party equipment such as torque guns, crimp devices, leak test units, barcode scanners, servomotors

Responsible for the effective launch of new products and seamless transitions of current products from advanced engineering to operations (Engineering Changes)

Performs time studies, line balancing, and implements improvements to current production processes

Actively engages line side production boards (RPS) to identify opportunities for improvement

Maintains, updates, and audits Visual Work Instructions and Standard Work for operators in assigned production cells

Originates statements of work specifications for changes to existing machines and fixtures

Attends new design proposal reviews and makes recommendations regarding manufacturability and compatibility with current manufacturing operations

Attends layout reviews for new products and makes recommendations for process flow, product assembly, and equipment

Performs internal process development of new and existing tooling

Reviews the performance of any process changes or machine improvements with the Quality department to ensure compliance with customer requirements

Performs revisions to the process FMEA, control plan, and production flow for design change

Assists Production Engineering for customer run-at-rates for new programs

Maintains required skills through training and studying of engineering and technical publications to keep current on technological changes and developments in the industry

Performs investigation and implementation of countermeasures to any internal and external quality or safety concerns
REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:
- A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or related discipline with at least three (3) years of experience in manufacturing automation programming and troubleshooting, OR an A.A.S. degree with five (5) years of experience as a manufacturing engineer working with manufacturing automation programming and troubleshooting
Required Skills:
- Knowledge of mechanics of machines and motion, heat transfer, fluid dynamics and strengths and mechanics of material
- Knowledge of torque guns, crimp devices, leak test, servos
Preferred Skills:
- Rockwell control logics, RS logics 500, Factory Talk, Siemens Step 7, WinCC Flex, TIA portal Plc/HMI software
